How auto-split chooses the cut

A dumb splitter counts to 280 and chops. That leaves posts ending in “the” and sentences stranded across two posts. This one works like an editor, looking for the most natural break that fits:

  1. Paragraphs. If a paragraph fits, it stays whole, and small paragraphs are packed together.
  2. Sentences. A long paragraph is cut after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
  3. Clauses. A sentence longer than a post is cut after a comma, semicolon, colon or dash.
  4. Words. Only then does it break between words, and it never splits a word unless one word is longer than a post.

It counts characters the way X does (links 23, emoji 2) and reserves room for the “7/12” label. Drag the slider to watch the seams move.

The paragraph is too long, so it’s cut only between sentences. Every post reads as a complete thought.

How do I split text into tweets?

Will it cut words or sentences in half?

Only as a last resort. It tries paragraph breaks first, then sentence ends, then commas, colons and dashes, then spaces between words. A word is only cut if a single word is longer than a whole post.

Does the numbering count toward 280?

Yes, and the splitter accounts for it. When numbering is on, it reserves room for labels like “12/12” so every numbered post still fits.

Can I split for a shorter limit, like Bluesky or Threads?

Yes. Change the post size: Bluesky allows 300 characters and Threads allows 500, though they count characters slightly differently from X.
