Before you paste: the accessibility cost
These aren’t fonts. They’re separate Unicode characters from the “Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols” block, meant for equations. That has three side effects:
- Screen readers may read them letter by letter as symbol names, or skip them. A bolded sentence can become gibberish to a blind reader.
- Search won’t match them. A styled word won’t show up when people search X for the normal word.
- Length: each styled letter counts as 2 toward the 280 limit.
Good use: one or two words of emphasis in a bio or a thread hook. Bad use: whole posts, hashtags, your name or anything important. Often the better emphasis is structure: a line break, a short sentence on its own line, or a number. The thread maker previews exactly how line breaks will look.
Questions
How do I make bold text on Twitter?
X has no bold button for regular posts (Premium long posts do). The workaround is Unicode: type your text above, copy the bold version and paste it into X. It looks bold because it uses special mathematical letter symbols.
Is Unicode bold text bad for accessibility?
It can be. Screen readers may read each styled letter as a symbol name (for example “mathematical bold capital T”) or skip it, and the text won’t show up in X search. Use it for a word or two of emphasis, never for whole posts, hashtags or anything people need to find.
Does bold text count as more characters?
Yes. The styled letters are outside the basic Latin range, so X counts each one as 2. Five bold words can cost twice their usual length. The counter below each style shows the real cost.
Can I do strikethrough on Twitter?
Yes, with a combining character added after each letter (U+0336). It renders as strikethrough on most devices but, like bold, doubles the character cost and can confuse screen readers.
